The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) unveiled the World's Top Science and Technology Clusters as identified in the Global Innovation Index 2023 (S&T Clusters Chapter) on Sept 20.
Xiamen was ranked 80th, 11 spots higher than in 2022 when it was first featured in the list.
The formation and development of the S&T Clusters often require the joint efforts of the government, market, and society.
Xiamen has in recent years been advancing the implementation of science and technology innovation projects, improving the scientific and technological innovation system, and strengthening the role of enterprises in science and technology innovation.
In 2022, the number of national high-tech enterprises in Xiamen grew by 806 to reach over 3,600. From January to June this year, 725 national high-tech enterprises saw year-on-year increases of more than 50 percent in revenue, with 461 enterprises seeing year-on-year increases of over 100 percent.
Xiamen is now aiming to boost social research and development investment to 3.6 percent by 2026, have over 5,000 national high-tech enterprises across the city, be ranked among the top 10 in the national index for urban innovation capability, and become a national regional center for technological innovation and a core hub for cross-Strait technological innovation.
